Your Complete Guide to the National Aptitude Test in Architecture

Hey there, future architect!

It is the National Aptitude Test in Architecture (NATA) is an important entrance exam for architects who are aspiring in India and offers a pathway to top architecture schools. The test is conducted through the Council of Architecture (CoA)NATA 2027 is designed to test an applicant’s ability to be an architect using a combination of visual, cognitive and technical skill tests.

If you’re the kind of person who looks at buildings and wonders about the story behind their design, who sketches floor plans for dream homes in your spare time, or who gets genuinely excited about skylines and spatial aesthetics, then you’ve probably already heard about NATA — the National Aptitude Test in Architecture. It’s the gateway to India’s best architecture colleges, and if you’re reading this, you’re probably gearing up for NATA 2027.

Here’s the thing about NATA: it’s not like your typical board exam or even JEE. It’s a unique blend of creativity and logic. One moment you’re sketching a perspective view of a bustling street, and the next you’re solving a visual reasoning puzzle or calculating the geometry of a complex structure. It tests whether you have the eye of an artist and the mind of an engineer — because that’s exactly what architecture demands.

Every year, thousands of students across India appear for NATA to secure admission into the 5-year Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch) program. With over 15,000 seats on offer through this single exam, the opportunity is massive — but so is the competition

This guide is your complete roadmap to cracking NATA 2027. Whether you’re a Class 12th student with PCM subjects wondering if your math skills are enough, or a diploma holder looking to upgrade to a B.Arch degree, we’ve got every detail covered. Let’s build your future, one blueprint at a time.

🎯What is NATA? Understanding the National Aptitude Test in Architecture

NATA stands for National Aptitude Test in Architecture. It’s conducted by the Council of Architecture (CoA) — the statutory body established by Parliament under the Architects Act, 1972 — to assess the aptitude of candidates for admission to the B.Arch program across India

Why NATA Matters

Unlike JEE Main (which also has a B.Arch paper), NATA is specifically designed for architecture. It doesn’t just test your math and physics knowledge — it evaluates your:
  • Drawing and visualization skills
  • Sense of proportion and perspective
  • Aesthetic sensitivity
  • Logical reasoning and critical thinking
  • General awareness of architecture and design

NATA scores are accepted by hundreds of architecture colleges across India, including prestigious institutions like SPA Delhi, CEPT Ahmedabad, Sir J.J. College of Architecture Mumbai, RVCE Bangalore, and hundreds of state and private colleges

Who Conducts NATA?

The Council of Architecture (CoA) is the sole conducting body. All updates, notifications, registrations, and results are published on the official website www.nata.in

How to Prepare for NATA 2027: A Practical Strategy

The 6-Month Preparation Timeline

Months 1-2 (January – February 2027): Foundation Building

Part A Focus:
  • Sketch daily for 45-60 minutes. Start with basic shapes, then objects, then buildings.
  • Practice perspective drawing (one-point and two-point).
  • Work on human figure proportions.
  • Experiment with color pencils, sketch pens, and watercolors.
Part B Focus:
  • Solve basic visual reasoning puzzles.
  • Start reading about architecture — famous buildings, architects, and design movements.
  • Brush up on Class 10 math (geometry especially).

Months 3-4 (March – April 2027): Skill Development

Part A Focus:
  • Practice timed sketches (15-minute, 30-minute compositions).
  • Work on memory drawing — look at a scene for 2 minutes, then sketch it.
  • Practice coloring compositions with limited palettes.
  • Work on 3D composition using household materials.
Part B Focus:
  • Solve NATA-level aptitude questions daily.
  • Build an architecture GK notebook. Note down important buildings, architects, and materials.
  • Practice numerical ability questions.

Months 5-6 (May – June 2027): Intensive Practice & Tests

Part A Focus:
  • Solve previous year drawing questions under timed conditions.
  • Get your sketches reviewed by mentors or online communities.
  • Practice with the actual materials you’ll use on exam day.
Part B Focus:
  • Take full-length Part B mock tests.
  • Revise architecture GK notes weekly.
  • Focus on weak areas identified in mock tests.

Subject-Wise Strategy

For Drawing (Part A):
  • NATA doesn’t expect professional artist-level work. What matters is concept clarity, proportion, and communication.
  • Practice sketching buildings from different angles.
  • Learn to draw human figures in various postures and scales.
  • Master shading techniques for different materials (glass, wood, brick, foliage).
  • For 3D composition, practice with clay, cardboard, and wire at home.
For Aptitude (Part B):
  • Visual Reasoning: Apps like Brain Teasers and spatial reasoning games help.
  • Architecture GK: Follow architecture pages on Instagram, read ArchDaily, visit buildings in your city.
  • Numerical Ability: Focus on geometry — area, volume, perimeter, and spatial unfolding.
  • Language: Read editorials daily. It helps with comprehension and GK simultaneously.

Daily Study Schedule (Sample)

Time SlotActivity
6:00 – 7:00 AMObservation sketching
9:00 – 10:30 AMPart B practice (aptitude questions)
4:00 – 5:30 PMPart A practice (drawing/composition)
6:00 – 7:00 PMArchitecture GK reading
8:00 – 9:00 PMMock test or previous year paper

The NATA Mindset

  • No negative marking = attempt everything. Don’t leave any question unattempted in Part B.
  • Part A is manually evaluated. Neatness, clarity, and concept matter more than artistic perfection.
  • Observe your surroundings. The best architects are keen observers. Train your eye to notice proportions, materials, and spatial relationships.

NATA 2027 Counselling & Admission Process

How NATA Admission Works

  1. NATA is only a qualifying exam. It gives you a score, not a seat.
  2. Individual colleges conduct their own admissions. You must apply separately to each architecture college you’re interested in.
  3. Each college has its own cutoff. Based on your NATA score, Class 12 marks, and category, colleges release their merit lists.
  4. Document verification and fee payment happen at the college level

Steps to Secure Admission

  1. Check College Websites: After your NATA result, visit the websites of your target colleges.
  2. Fill College Application Forms: Most colleges have separate application forms for B.Arch admission.

NATA vs JEE B.Arch: Which One Should You Take?

Many students wonder whether they should take NATA, JEE B.Arch, or both. Here’s the breakdown:

Take NATA If:

  • You want access to 500+ architecture colleges across India
  • You prefer multiple attempts (up to 3 per year)
  • You want your score to be valid for 2 years
  • You’re targeting colleges like SPA Delhi, CEPT, Sir J.J., and state/private architecture colleges

Take JEE B.Arch If:

  • You’re targeting NITs and IITs for B.Arch
  • You’re already preparing for JEE Main
  • You want a centralized counselling process (JoSAA)

The Smart Strategy

Take both. They complement each other. JEE B.Arch gets you into NITs/IITs, while NATA gets you into virtually every other architecture college in India. The syllabi overlap significantly — drawing, aptitude, and math are common to both.
